The problem is it often plays like a polished sitcom premise stretched to feature length, with contrived plot mechanics doing the heavy lifting instead of genuine romantic momentum. If you need your love stories to feel urgent, believable, and emotionally sweeping, you may find the central relationship oddly flat despite the “scandalous” setup. Still, Uma Thurman and especially Meryl Streep bring enough charm and comedic timing to make it watchable if you’re in the mood for light, talky New York relationship drama rather than a deeply satisfying romance.
