Kicking & Screaming (2005)

Kicking & Screaming is the kind of family comedy that sneaks up on you: it’s a goofy little-league soccer movie with a surprisingly relatable heartbeat about trying not to repeat your parents’ worst habits. Will Ferrell turns Phil Weston into a walking bundle of insecurity and caffeine-fueled bravado, and the movie lets him be loud and ridiculous without losing sight of the kid’s-eye stakes that make sports stories work. A lot of the humor comes from kids getting knocked around and some mildly crude bits, which can play mean-spirited or just tiring depending on your tolerance. If you’re after a breezy, low-stakes family watch with a few fun moments (and a reliably stern Robert Duvall), it’s serviceable—but if you want sharp comedy or a fresh sports movie, you’ll probably feel shortchanged.
