Creep (2004)

Creep takes a deliciously simple nightmare—a missed last train—then tightens it into a grimy, pulse-quickening descent through the London Underground that feels claustrophobic in all the right ways. Christopher Smith keeps the film lean and mean, letting the station’s empty corridors and echoing tunnels do as much work as the jolts, while Franka Potente sells every ounce of panic and stubborn survival instinct with a performance that’s easy to root for. The movie’s monster has a nasty, psychopathic edge and the whole thing carries a rough, confrontational attitude that makes it feel more like you’re trapped down there than just watching from a safe seat. It’s not for the squeamish—this is bloody, harsh horror—but if you want a stripped-down thriller that delivers real frights and doesn’t overcomplicate the terror, Creep is a nasty little ride worth taking.

Creep is clearly trying to be a grimy, back-to-basics London Underground slasher where the setting does most of the heavy lifting, and to be fair it nails a claustrophobic, late-night dread that can get under your skin. The problem is it leans hard on trashy shocks and familiar genre beats, so if you’re hoping for a clever mystery or fresh twists, you’ll likely feel like you’ve seen this ride before. The nastiness is the point here—strong gore, ugly menace, and a mean streak that doesn’t always feel earned—so it’s not a good pick if you want suspense over splatter. If you can tolerate the rough edges, Franka Potente’s committed performance and the dank, tunnel-rat atmosphere make it watchable; otherwise, it’s a promising premise that often settles for cheap jolts.
