Oliver Twist (2005)

Oliver Twist (2005) feels special because it treats Dickens not as homework, but as lived-in, urgent cinema—every soot-stained alley and candlelit room rendered with a painter’s precision and a storyteller’s pulse. Roman Polanski builds a grim yet strangely humane atmosphere, where tenderness and terror sit side by side, and Ben Kingsley’s Fagin is all charm, menace, and weary survival instinct without tipping into caricature. It’s classical filmmaking in the best sense: clear, faithful, and absorbing, letting the moral weight of poverty and exploitation land without melodrama. Fair warning, it’s intense and often cruel—especially where children are concerned—so it’s not a cozy family watch, but if you want a beautifully made, emotionally bracing adaptation, this one earns its place.

Roman Polanski’s Oliver Twist is clearly trying to deliver a faithful, handsomely mounted Dickens adaptation—grimy London, moral outrage, and a child caught in a machine of cruelty. The problem is it often feels oddly muted: the storytelling is conventional, the pacing can be low on urgency, and Oliver himself can come across more as a symbol being pushed around than a character you truly latch onto. If you want a vivid, emotionally punchy take with a strong, distinctive point of view, this may feel tasteful but a bit impersonal. Still, the period detail is solid and Ben Kingsley brings real texture to Fagin, so it can work if you’re in the mood for a restrained, straightforward version rather than a gripping reinvention.
