Goal! (2005)
Like millions of kids around the world, Santiago harbors the dream of being a professional footballer... However, living in the Barrios section of Los Angeles, he thinks it is only that—a dream. Until one day an extraordinary turn of events has him trying out for Premiership club Newcastle United.
What people think about Goal!
Goal! is pure, crowd-pleasing sports cinema: a scrappy underdog story that doesn’t pretend dreams are easy, but makes you believe they’re worth chasing anyway. Danny Cannon gives the film a lived-in, boots-on-mud authenticity—when the matches hit, they feel fast, physical, and joyfully real—and Kuno Becker carries the journey with an earnestness that keeps the sentiment grounded. The vibe is upbeat and inspirational without turning syrupy, balancing locker-room energy, culture shock, and hard-earned opportunity with just enough romance and humor to keep it breezy. If you’re allergic to familiar sports-movie beats it may feel comfortably conventional, but if you want a sincere, rousing ride that leaves you a little more hopeful than you started, this one scores.
Goal! is clearly aiming to be a rousing, underdog football fairy tale, and it mostly succeeds at delivering that glossy, feel-good lift. The problem is the script is as predictable as a training montage: familiar beats, convenient turns, and character drama that often feels like it’s there because the genre demands it, not because it’s earned. If you want a realistic, grounded look at the sport or an immigrant story with real bite, this may come off as slick but shallow and occasionally a bit nonsensical. Still, the match sequences have genuine energy, the Newcastle setting is fun for fans, and if you’re in the mood for straightforward inspiration rather than surprise, it’ll do the job.
