Be Cool (2005)

Be Cool is the kind of slick, self-aware crime comedy that glides on charisma and insider satire, taking the showbiz hustle and turning it into a playful, fast-talking ride. John Travolta’s Chili Palmer moves through the music-world madness like he owns the room, while Dwayne Johnson and Vince Vaughn steal scenes with surprising comic timing and an easy confidence that keeps the laughs coming. The vibe is breezy and knowingly ridiculous, full of sharp banter, colorful characters, and just enough underworld edge to give the comedy some bite. It’s not for everyone if you want a tight, grounded plot, but if you’re in the mood for an underrated studio-era gem that’s more about swagger and entertainment than realism, this one is a very good time.

Be Cool is clearly trying to recapture Get Shorty’s slick, showbiz-crime charm by swapping Hollywood for the music industry and piling on celebrity cameos and in-jokes. The problem is it often feels like it’s coasting on that concept rather than delivering sharp scenes, with a messy plot and jokes that land inconsistently, so the whole thing can come off slack and a bit tedious. If you’re expecting the same tight wit and cool confidence of the first film, this sequel will likely disappoint. That said, there are a few fun performances and moments of satirical bite, so it can work as lightweight background entertainment if you’re in the mood for a breezy, star-studded hangout rather than a genuinely clever crime-comedy.
