Anniyan (2005)

Anniyan is the kind of big, fearless commercial cinema that swings for the rafters—part social fury, part psychological thriller, part grand spectacle—and somehow keeps you leaning forward through all of it. Shankar stages Chennai like a pressure cooker of everyday corruption, then cracks it open with audacious set pieces and a propulsive, almost breathless narration that keeps escalating without losing its sense of showmanship. At the center is Vikram, delivering a tour-de-force triple performance that isn’t just “impressive acting” but the engine of the movie’s shifting mood, from anxious restraint to swaggering charm to something genuinely unsettling. It’s not subtle and it’s certainly not gentle—the violence can be intense and the film’s moral outrage is loud—but if you’re on the fence and want a stylish, technically dazzling thriller with a star performance that practically dares you to look away, Anniyan earns its reputation.

Anniyan is trying to be a big, angry social sermon wrapped in a glossy action-thriller, and when it’s firing on all cylinders it’s undeniably energetic—Vikram’s performance and Shankar’s maximalist staging do a lot of heavy lifting. The problem is it demands you swallow some pretty wild leaps in logic and a very simplified take on multiple personality disorder, so if you like your thrillers grounded, this will test your patience. It’s also long and stuffed with tonal detours (including song-and-style segments) that can feel like padding if you’re not already on its wavelength. And fair warning: the vigilante punishments are brutal and intense, so if graphic violence or disturbing imagery isn’t your thing, this is an easy skip.
