Alfie (2004)

Alfie is a slick, Manhattan-set cocktail of comedy, romance, and self-reckoning that’s powered almost entirely by Jude Law’s dangerous charisma—he makes a man you shouldn’t trust feel irresistible to watch. The film’s secret weapon is its direct, conspiratorial relationship with the audience, pulling you into Alfie’s breezy confidence even as the good times start to curdle into questions he can’t flirt his way past. It’s glossy and groovy on the surface, but there’s a conscience underneath, with Marisa Tomei and Omar Epps grounding the story in real feelings and consequences. If you’re allergic to R-rated sexual candor or don’t enjoy spending time with a charming mess of a protagonist, it may not be your night—but if you want a sexy, funny ride that actually has something to say when the music fades, Alfie delivers.

Alfie (2004) is aiming for a glossy, modern morality tale about a charming womanizer finally confronting the emptiness behind the fun, and Jude Law has enough charisma to make you understand why people fall for him. The problem is the movie often mistakes smug self-awareness for insight, so the humor can feel thin and the “big lesson” arrives in fits and starts rather than building naturally. If you need a romantic lead you can actually root for, or you’re hoping for a sharp, sexy comedy with real bite, this version may come off as hollow and oddly sanitized for such explicit material. Still, if you’re in the mood for a slick Manhattan vibe, strong supporting turns (especially Marisa Tomei), and a light, talky character study about consequences, it can be a tolerable watch—just don’t expect it to justify why it needed to exist.
