Jared Hess shoots high school life like a deadpan folk tale, letting Jon Heder’s wonderfully oddball performance, Efren Ramirez’s sweet sincerity, and Tina Majorino’s shy warmth turn everyday weirdness into something oddly heroic. The vibe is dry, quotable, and gently absurd rather than laugh-out-loud nonstop, and that’s exactly why it sticks: it’s less about jokes than about the strange comfort of finding your people. If you need slick plotting or broad, obvious comedy, it may feel too offbeat—but if you’re even slightly amused by misfits trying their best, this one’s a small miracle.
