Im Sang-soo stages the story with sleek, confident cinematography, but it’s Moon So-ri who makes it linger: her performance turns a potentially scandalous setup into a quietly devastating portrait of a woman waking up to the life she’s been living. The vibe is provocative and adult, less a moral lecture than an incisive social x-ray of how people negotiate loneliness, power, and intimacy behind respectable doors. It’s not for everyone—there’s explicit sexuality and some very dark turns—but if you can handle its candor, it’s an entertaining, sharply observed drama that keeps revealing new, uncomfortable truths about relationships.

A Good Lawyer’s Wife is aiming for a cool, clinical dissection of desire, hypocrisy, and family rot beneath a respectable surface, and it does commit to that uncomfortable honesty. The problem is it can feel more like watching people self-destruct at arm’s length than being pulled into a gripping drama—its tone is deliberately detached, the characters often read as emotionally opaque, and the shock-heavy turns can land as bleak rather than meaningful. It’s also packed with explicit sexual content and some genuinely distressing material involving a child, so if you’re not in the mood for provocation and misery, this will feel like a punishment. If you do have patience for slow-burn Korean arthouse melodrama with strong performances and a fearless, unsparing gaze, there’s craft here—but it’s absolutely not a “movie night” pick for most people.
