Guess Who (2005)

Guess Who is the kind of crowd-pleasing comedy that works because it never forgets the people inside the punchlines: a family with pride, a couple in love, and one very protective father who can turn a raised eyebrow into a full-blown interrogation. Bernie Mac brings volcanic charisma and impeccable timing, and the movie wisely lets his sparring with Ashton Kutcher play like a comedic tennis match—sharp, rhythmic, and surprisingly warm when it counts. The vibe is breezy and sitcom-snappy, built on escalating misunderstandings and social discomfort, but it also has a decent heart about what families fear, what they assume, and what it takes to earn a place at the table. It is a formula-driven studio rom-com and leans into broad, occasionally cringe humor (including some mild sexual jokes), but if you want an easy watch with genuine chemistry and a premise that still lands, it’s a satisfying pick.

Guess Who is clearly aiming for a crowd-pleasing, meet-the-parents rom-com that uses interracial dating tension to spark awkward comedy and, eventually, a feel-good thaw. The problem is it leans hard on predictable setups, broad sitcom misunderstandings, and jokes that often feel more sketchy than sharp, so if you’re hoping for the bite or relevance of the 1967 original, you’ll likely find this one lightweight and a bit dated. Bernie Mac brings the most energy and timing, and there are a few genuinely amusing moments when the cast is allowed to just play off each other, but the writing keeps steering back to clichés and forced conflict. If you enjoy safe, mainstream rom-coms with mild sex-related humor and lots of “cringe dinner weekend” beats, it may be fine; if you need smarter satire or fresher comedy, you can probably spend your time better.
