Mysterious Skin (2005)

Mysterious Skin is the rare drama that looks straight at unbearable pain and somehow finds a way to be humane, lyrical, and quietly liberating, without ever cheapening what it’s about. Gregg Araki directs with a steady, compassionate hand, letting the film’s eerie, dreamlike mood and small-town melancholy pull you in as two young lives circle the same wound from radically different angles. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is fearless and heartbreaking, and Brady Corbet gives the story its haunted, searching soul, so even the hardest moments feel anchored in truth rather than shock. This is not an easy watch—its subject matter is deeply upsetting—but if you’re on the fence and want a film that’s genuinely affecting, emotionally resonant, and made with real care, it stays with you for the right reasons.

Mysterious Skin is clearly trying to confront childhood trauma and the messy ways people survive it, using two very different coming-of-age paths that eventually collide. The problem is that Gregg Araki’s approach can feel deliberately raw and provocative to the point where some viewers will read it as exploitation rather than insight, especially when the film lingers in sleaze-adjacent territory around sex work and violence. Even though the abuse is mostly implied, the emotional fallout is front and center, and there are scenes that are genuinely distressing, so if you’re sensitive to sexual violence or want a more measured, therapeutic tone, this will likely feel punishing. That said, the performances (especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet) are committed and human, and if you can handle the material, the film does land moments of empathy amid the ugliness.
