National Treasure (2004)
Modern treasure hunters, led by archaeologist Ben Gates, search for a chest of riches rumored to have been stashed away by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin during the Revolutionary War. The chest's whereabouts may lie in secret clues embedded in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and Gates is in a race to find the gold before his enemies do.
What people think about National Treasure
National Treasure is the rare modern adventure that feels like a Saturday-matinee thrill ride with a brain: a breathless scavenger hunt where American history becomes a playground of codes, hidden doors, and “wait, what if?” possibilities. Jon Turteltaub keeps the pace snappy and the tone upbeat, letting Nicolas Cage’s earnest, slightly unhinged commitment sell every clue as if it’s the most important discovery on Earth, while Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha add wit and spark to the chase. It’s clever without being smug, wholesome without being bland, and consistently fun in the way a good mystery should be—always dangling the next puzzle just out of reach. If you’re allergic to pulpy historical mythmaking, it may feel like a theme-park version of the past, but if you want an energetic, crowd-pleasing ride, this one delivers.
National Treasure is trying to be a breezy, family-friendly Indiana Jones-style romp where American history becomes a giant puzzle box, and on that simple level it mostly delivers. The problem is the clue-solving is so contrived and the coincidences so generous that if you need your mysteries to feel remotely plausible, you’ll spend a lot of time rolling your eyes. The action beats are pretty formulaic and the story is predictably structured, so don’t go in expecting a smart thriller or nuanced character work. But if you’re happy to switch your brain off and enjoy Nicolas Cage sprinting through landmarks with energetic momentum, it’s an easy, harmless watch.
