Spymate (2006)
Amelia, a young genius and daughter of a top secret agent, unknowingly invents a contraption that makes her the target of an evil scientist.
What people think about Spymate
Spymate is the kind of breezy, kid-friendly adventure that knows exactly what it wants to be: a colorful spy caper where the gadgets are shiny, the pace is peppy, and the most reliable operative in the room just happens to be a primate. Director Robert Vince leans into a playful, Saturday-afternoon vibe, mixing mild peril with broad comedy and enough slick location work to make the “secret mission” world feel bigger than its modest scale. Emma Roberts brings an appealing spark as a young genius caught between science-fair brilliance and espionage chaos, while Richard Kind makes a satisfyingly cartoonish villain you can boo without feeling grim about it. It won’t convert anyone who can’t abide talking-animal antics, but if you’re on the fence and want a light, glossy family diversion with simple stakes and a warm father-daughter core, it’s an easy yes.
Spymate is aiming for a kid-friendly spy spoof with a cute hook: a genius daughter, a retiring agent dad, and a “super-spy” monkey doing slapstick heroics. The problem is it plays like a bargain-bin TV special stretched to feature length—thin story beats, very predictable twists, and comedy that leans heavily on noisy antics rather than clever writing. If you’re expecting anything resembling a sharp family adventure or a genuinely exciting spy caper, you’ll likely find it dated, simplistic, and weirdly tedious for how much it tries to keep moving. That said, younger kids who’ll laugh at a monkey doing spy business and don’t care about logic, pacing, or polish may still get a harmless, PG-level time-waster out of it.
