A Dirty Shame (2004)

A Dirty Shame is John Waters in full, gloriously disreputable stride: a candy-colored Baltimore fairy tale where bad taste becomes a kind of freedom and the joke is always aimed at hypocrisy. Tracey Ullman commits with fearless physical comedy, Johnny Knoxville plays the town’s grinning prophet of pleasure with surprising charm, and the whole thing moves like a filthy marching band—loud, buoyant, and weirdly joyous. Beneath the NC-17 shock tactics is a satirical warmth, a sense that Waters is less interested in scandal for its own sake than in puncturing the uptight rules that make people miserable. It’s absolutely not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to explicit, nonstop raunch, but if you can meet it on its own warped wavelength, it’s wickedly funny, brazenly original, and hard to forget.

A Dirty Shame is John Waters trying to crank his trademark bad-taste satire into a full-blown, sex-as-religion cartoon, and it absolutely commits to that mission with zero shame. The problem is that the joke doesn’t really evolve: it’s essentially “concussions make everyone horny” played louder and broader until it starts to feel repetitive, sluggish, and oddly unfocused for something so outrageous. If you’re expecting the sharper bite and escalating absurdity of Waters at his best, you may find this more like a one-note provocation than a coherent comedy. That said, Tracey Ullman throws herself into the transformation with fearless energy, and if you’re specifically in the mood for NC-17 filth as camp spectacle, you’ll get exactly what you came for.
