Art School Confidential (2006)

Art School Confidential is special because it skewers the myth of the tortured genius with a wickedly observant eye, turning art-school aspiration into a darkly funny pressure cooker where taste, status, and insecurity do most of the talking. Terry Zwigoff directs with a cartoonist’s precision and a cynic’s tenderness, letting the campus’s critiques, crushes, and petty rivalries feel both absurd and painfully recognizable, anchored by Max Minghella’s earnest, yearning performance. Art School Confidential wants to be a savage satire of the art-world machine, skewering pretension, trend-chasing, and the way “success” often has nothing to do with skill. When it works, it’s sharply observed and occasionally very funny, helped by a committed cast (Malkovich in particular knows exactly what movie he’s in).
