Without a Paddle (2004)
Three friends, whose lives have been drifting apart, reunite for the funeral of a fourth childhood friend. When looking through their childhood belongings, they discover a trunk which contained details on a quest their friend was attempting. It revealed that he was hot on the trail of the $200,000 that went missing with airplane hijacker D.B. Cooper in 1971. They decide to continue his journey, but do not understand the dangers they will soon encounter.
What people think about Without a Paddle
Without a Paddle is the kind of scruffy, good-natured adventure comedy that sneaks up on you: it starts with grief and nostalgia, then kicks into a brisk, outdoorsy misadventure where friendship is the real engine. Seth Green, Matthew Lillard, and Dax Shepard have a likable, bickering chemistry that makes even the dumb decisions feel weirdly endearing, and the movie keeps finding playful ways to turn the wilderness into a slapstick obstacle course without losing its sense of whimsy. There’s a light mystery hook in the D.B. Cooper legend, but the real pleasure is the vibe—three guys rediscovering each other while everything around them goes hilariously sideways. It’s definitely not for anyone allergic to PG-13 crudity, but if you’re in the mood for an easygoing, buddy-comedy trek with a warm heart under the grime, it delivers.
Without a Paddle wants to be a goofy buddy-adventure about old friends reconnecting while chasing a D.B. Cooper-style treasure myth, and you can feel the movie reaching for that mix of heart and chaos. The problem is it leans hard on broad, bodily-function humor and familiar “backwoods weirdos” gags, so if you’re allergic to clichés and crude comedy, the laughs may feel thin for a full runtime. The pacing also drifts, with stretches that play like a string of sketchy misadventures rather than a mystery that actually builds. If you like Seth Green/Matthew Lillard/Dax Shepard bickering and don’t mind a sloppy, slapstick wilderness romp, it’s an easy, low-stakes watch—but don’t expect a clever mystery or consistent comedy.
