Criminal (2004)

Criminal is the kind of con movie that doesn’t just ask you to watch a scam unfold—it invites you to lean in close and admire the craftsmanship of the hustle, beat by beat, with a sly grin. Gregory Jacobs keeps the vibe taut and playful, letting the humor seep out of the characters’ nerves and ego rather than winking at the audience, while the twists feel less like gimmicks and more like the natural consequence of everyone trying to out-lie everyone else. John C. Reilly is a delight as a smooth-talking operator who’s always performing, Diego Luna brings a quietly magnetic stillness that makes his “perfect poker face” believable, and Maggie Gyllenhaal adds a grounded spark that complicates the game in the best way. If you’ve already memorized every classic con trick, you may spot familiar moves, but the pleasure here is watching a terrific cast make the mechanics feel alive, funny, and just dangerous enough.

Criminal is clearly aiming for a slick, twisty con-artist thriller with a bit of dry humor, and it does benefit from strong, watchable performances from John C. Reilly and Diego Luna. The problem is that the movie leans so heavily on the mechanics of its story that it can feel more like a well-rehearsed routine than a genuinely surprising ride, especially if you’ve seen the film it’s based on. Even if you haven’t, the execution isn’t always sharp enough to make the turns land with maximum punch, so the tension can flatten when it should be tightening. If you want an original, edge-of-your-seat scam movie, this may leave you underwhelmed, but if you’re happy with competent genre comfort food and charismatic actors doing solid work, it’s an easy enough watch.
