Duma is aiming for a heartfelt, old-school family adventure about friendship, grief, and doing the right thing for a wild animal, and it largely delivers that gentle, earnest tone. The catch is that the story is extremely familiar—if you’ve seen one “boy and animal” journey with predictable lessons and neatly placed dangers, you’ll spot the beats coming a mile away. Carroll Ballard’s direction and the South African landscapes do a lot of heavy lifting, and the cheetah footage is genuinely lovely, but the drama can feel like it’s running on rails rather than surprising you.
