Valiant (2005)
Set in 1944, Valiant is a woodland pigeon who wants to become a great hero someday. When he hears they are hiring recruits for the Royal Homing Pigeon Service, he immediately sets out for London. On the way, he meets a smelly but friendly pigeon named Bugsy, who joins him, mainly to get away from clients he cheated in a game of find-the pebble, and helps him sign up for the war.
What people think about Valiant
Valiant takes a wonderfully oddball premise—World War II seen through the brave, fluttering eyes of messenger pigeons—and turns it into a brisk, family-friendly adventure with real charm in its feathers. Ewan McGregor gives Valiant an earnest underdog sweetness you can root for, while Ricky Gervais’ Bugsy brings a scruffy, streetwise comic energy that keeps the movie bouncing along, and Tim Curry has delicious fun as a theatrically menacing falcon. The tone is light and upbeat even when the wartime stakes loom in the background, with action that’s exciting without tipping into anything too intense for most kids. It’s not the most original animated story you’ll ever see, but if you want an easy, good-natured watch with a likable hero, solid laughs, and a surprisingly spirited sense of mission, Valiant delivers.
Valiant is clearly aiming for a kid-friendly WWII adventure with an underdog hero, broad comedy, and a simple message about courage and teamwork. The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar beats, so even younger viewers may feel the story coming a mile away, and the pacing can drag between set pieces. The animation and action don’t have the polish or inventiveness of the era’s top-tier animated films, which makes the whole thing feel smaller and cheaper than its big “war mission” premise wants to be. That said, the voice cast brings some energy (Tim Curry in particular), and if your family just wants a harmless, mildly perilous animal adventure without edge or complexity, it can do the job—just don’t expect it to soar.
