What makes Constantine special is how confidently it turns modern Los Angeles into a neon-lit battleground between the sacred and the damned, blending comic-book imagination with a smoky, hardboiled detective vibe. Keanu Reeves plays John Constantine like a man who’s already stared into the abyss and learned to bargain with it, and the film’s pleasures come as much from its attitude and atmosphere as from its punchy action. Francis Lawrence stages the supernatural with striking, tactile visuals—demons feel grimy, angels feel unnervingly clean—and Rachel Weisz grounds the chaos with real urgency and heart. It’s not a strict-faithful comic adaptation and it leans into stylish pulp, but if you want a fun, eerie, eminently rewatchable cult classic, this one delivers.

Constantine is clearly aiming for a smoky, occult-noir vibe—angels, demons, and moral rot lurking under modern L.A.—and when it clicks, the atmosphere and creature design are genuinely cool. The problem is it often feels like it’s juggling too many ideas at once, so the story can come off confusing, unfocused, and oddly sluggish for an action-horror. If you’re a die-hard fan of the source material, be warned: it takes big swings away from the comics’ tone and character, which is where a lot of the backlash comes from.
