Adam McKay captures the shag-carpet swagger of 1970s local news with a straight-faced commitment that makes the absurdity land even harder, and Will Ferrell’s Ron is a magnificent monument to ego, clueless charm, and perfectly timed meltdown. The real joy, though, is the ensemble: everyone from Christina Applegate’s sharp, game-for-anything co-lead to Paul Rudd and Steve Carell firing off lines like they’re in a friendly competition to steal the scene. It’s proudly crude and intentionally over-the-top, so it won’t be for viewers allergic to PG-13 raunch, but if you want a warm, anarchic, endlessly rewatchable comedy, this is a classic for a reason.
