Brett Sullivan wraps the story in a cold, bruised atmosphere where every hallway feels watched and every “treatment” comes with a threat, and Emily Perkins carries it with a raw, fiercely human performance that makes the supernatural feel painfully personal. Tatiana Maslany brings an off-kilter spark as Ghost, a character who shifts the film into a dark fairy tale without ever softening its bite, while the writing keeps the tension sharp and the choices unpredictable. It’s not for the squeamish—or anyone sensitive to self-harm imagery and sexual coercion—but if you want horror with teeth and meaning, this one lingers like a wound you can’t stop touching.

Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed is clearly trying to turn the werewolf metaphor into a grim, claustrophobic addiction-and-body-horror spiral, keeping Brigitte’s story raw and desperate rather than “fun.” The problem is it can feel scattered and oddly paced, with tonal swerves where the dark humor lands a bit smug instead of sharp, so the dread doesn’t always build as cleanly as the first film. It’s also a tougher sit than you might expect: the rehab setting, self-harm imagery, sexual coercion, and nasty gore aren’t window dressing, they’re central to the experience. If you want the original’s bite and teen-satire spark, this may disappoint—but if you’re up for a meaner, more downbeat sequel with strong performances (especially Perkins and a young Tatiana Maslany) and some genuinely unsettling moments, it still has value.
