Pokémon Heroes (2002)

Pokémon Heroes is special because it drops Ash and company into Alto Mare, a sunlit canal city that feels like a storybook Venice, and lets the setting do half the magic—every chase and quiet moment glides on water, color, and charm. The movie’s vibe is breezy and romantic-adventurous, with bright visuals, catchy music, and a surprisingly elegant sense of atmosphere that makes it feel like a vacation you can watch. Latias and Latios bring a gentle, mythic weight to the action, so even the gadgety villains and Pokémon battles carry a sense of wonder rather than just noise. If you want gritty stakes or deep character reinvention, this isn’t that kind of film, but if you’re on the fence and crave a warm, visually delightful Pokémon adventure with a heartfelt afterglow, it’s an easy yes.

Pokémon Heroes is clearly aiming for a breezy, Venice-inspired caper with a gentle mystery, cute disguises, and a big “save the city” finale anchored by Latias and Latios. The problem is it plays like a long TV episode stretched to movie length: the villains are thin, the plot mechanics get oddly muddled for something meant for kids, and the emotional beats don’t always land unless you’re already invested in the Pokémon world. On the plus side, Altomare is genuinely charming, the action is clean and family-safe, and the Latias/Latios focus gives it a sweeter tone than some entries. If you’re not a Pokémon fan (or you want sharper storytelling and more inventive set pieces), this one may feel bland and surprisingly slow.
