What people think about The Lost City
What makes The Lost City special is how it turns history into something you can feel in your bones: Havana shimmers with beauty and danger, and the film lets the romance of the era coexist with the dread of a country changing overnight. It’s a lush, heartfelt piece of storytelling, steeped in exceptional Cuban music that doesn’t just decorate scenes but seems to carry the characters’ longing, pride, and grief from one moment to the next. Without sensationalizing the politics, it stays grounded in family and identity, capturing the particular ache of watching a beloved world slip away and realizing you may not be able to follow it. If you’re looking for a subtle, nostalgic drama rather than a fast-paced thriller, this one rewards you with atmosphere, emotion, and a sincere tribute to a place and a time.
The Lost City is clearly aiming for a lush, elegiac portrait of pre-revolution Havana and the personal cost of political upheaval, with romance and family loyalty caught in the crossfire. The problem is it often feels more like a series of handsome, moody scenes than a story with real momentum, so the long runtime can drag and the narrative can come off disjointed. If you’re looking for a sharp, deep, historically probing take on the Cuban Revolution or richly developed characters, this may feel romanticized and emotionally distant. Still, if you’re in the mood for atmosphere, period detail, and a melancholy “world slipping away” vibe, there’s enough style and sincerity to make it a passable watch.
