Along Came Polly (2004)

Along Came Polly is a rom-com that works because it’s built on a genuinely funny idea: what happens when a man who treats life like a spreadsheet collides with a woman who treats it like an improv set. Ben Stiller leans into Reuben’s anxious, tightly wound energy with precision, Jennifer Aniston gives Polly an easy warmth that keeps the movie buoyant, and Philip Seymour Hoffman nearly steals the whole thing with fearless, scene-crashing commitment. The vibe is breezy and fast, mixing sweet chemistry with big, sometimes shameless set pieces that aren’t afraid to get a little messy in the name of a laugh. It’s not for anyone who hates gross-out humor or edgy PG-13 innuendo, but if you want a comfort-watch comedy with real comic performers firing on all cylinders, it’s an easy yes.

Along Came Polly is trying to mash up a neat little opposites-attract rom-com with a “Ben Stiller humiliates himself” comedy about learning to take risks, and you can see the intent even when it doesn’t land. The problem is it leans hard on loud, telegraphed gross-out set pieces and recycled gags, so if you’re not into bodily-function humor and very explicit PG-13 sexual banter, you’ll feel like the movie is elbowing you for laughs. The romance is serviceable but pretty paint-by-numbers, and the central chemistry isn’t strong enough to make the formula feel fresh. Still, Philip Seymour Hoffman commits like it’s a prestige drama and gets some of the funniest moments, so if you want a breezy, mildly raunchy early-2000s time capsule, it can pass the time—just don’t expect a standout rom-com.
