Unleashed (2005)
Raised as a slave, Danny is used to fighting for his survival. In fact, his "master," Bart, thinks of him as a pet and goes as far as leashing him with a collar so they can make money in fight clubs, where Danny is the main contender. When Bart's crew is in a car accident, Danny escapes and meets a blind, kindhearted piano tuner who takes him in and uses music to free the fighter's long-buried heart.
What people think about Unleashed
Unleashed is what happens when a hard-edged crime thriller makes room for a bruised human soul, giving Jet Li one of his most surprisingly tender and affecting performances in English. The action hits with bone-deep impact—cleanly staged, brutally efficient, and never just noise—because every fight feels tied to a man learning what he’s been denied: choice, dignity, and a life beyond violence. Morgan Freeman brings a quiet warmth that shifts the movie’s vibe from grim to hopeful without sanding off its rough edges, while Bob Hoskins makes the cruelty feel uncomfortably real. It’s not for viewers who want their action bloodless or their sentiment strictly rationed, but if you’re open to a tough story with real heart beating under the knuckles, this one lands.
Unleashed is clearly trying to mash up a gritty Jet Li beatdown movie with a bruised, sentimental “man learns to be human” drama, and you can feel the heart behind that idea. The problem is the script often treats its central premise like a shortcut, jumping from brutal exploitation to warm healing moments in ways that can feel emotionally awkward and, frankly, a bit implausible. If you want tight crime plotting or nuanced character work, this may leave you rolling your eyes between the fights. But if you’re here primarily for sharp, physical action and don’t mind a melodramatic, fairy-tale-ish redemption arc (plus solid supporting turns from Freeman and Hoskins), it can still be a watchable time.
