Kate Beckinsale brings steel and poise to the mayhem, while Richard Roxburgh’s Dracula chews the scenery with such theatrical delight you can practically hear the cape snap. It’s not for viewers seeking subtle scares or grounded realism, but if you want spectacular, “schlocky” creature-feature fun that knows exactly what it is, this one delivers.

Van Helsing is clearly aiming to be a pulpy, old-school Universal-monsters mashup—big action, gothic atmosphere, and a theme-park ride through Dracula, Frankenstein, and werewolves. The problem is it often feels like it’s sprinting from one CGI-heavy set piece to the next, with a messy plot and too little character grounding to make you care when the noise stops. Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale bring committed star power, and the production design has flashes of fun, spooky flair, but the tone can be oddly dreary and the effects-driven chaos overwhelms any sense of soul. If you want coherent storytelling or genuinely unsettling horror, this probably isn’t your night; if you’re happy with loud, campy monster action, you may still get a kick out of it.
