Cellular (2004)

Cellular is the kind of high-concept thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go, turning one frantic phone call into a breathless race against time. It’s lean, energetic, and surprisingly fun for something so tense, with momentum that keeps escalating as ordinary places become pressure-cooker set pieces. The movie’s biggest pleasure is how engagingly it juggles danger, urgency, and quick-thinking problem solving, always pushing you to wonder how the next impossible hurdle will be cleared. It does ask you to accept a few implausibilities, but if you can go with the ride, you’ll get a well-paced, relentlessly entertaining jolt of action-thriller adrenaline.

Cellular is trying to be a breathless, real-time rescue thriller powered by a single phone call and nonstop escalation, and to its credit it rarely slows down. The problem is the whole setup can feel like a slick gimmick—almost a feature-length cell phone ad—and the plot asks you to swallow a lot of convenient coincidences to keep the chase moving. It’s also more intense and explicit than some expect, with shootouts and injuries that aren’t shy about getting nasty. If you can enjoy a high-concept, slightly ridiculous ride, you’ll probably have fun; if you need grounded logic or prefer your action less brutal, this may not be your movie.
