Starsky & Hutch (2004)

Starsky & Hutch is that rare reboot that understands the assignment: it doesn’t try to “fix” the past, it throws a party in it, complete with shag-carpet swagger and a genuinely winning buddy-cop heartbeat. Ben Stiller’s tightly wound Starsky and Owen Wilson’s effortlessly cool Hutch spark off each other with the kind of comic rhythm you can’t manufacture, and the movie keeps finding ways to turn their mismatched styles into both laughs and unexpected warmth. Todd Phillips keeps the pace breezy and the crime plot just sturdy enough to hang the jokes on, while Snoop Dogg’s Huggy Bear glides in like the film’s secret sauce. It’s not for anyone hunting a serious procedural (and it does come with raunchy, druggy 2000s comedy edges), but if you want an easygoing, good-natured throwback that consistently lands its punchlines, this is a surprisingly satisfying ride.
