Salomé (2002)
Salomé's story interpreted by a director and a troupe of flamenco dancers.
What people think about Salomé
Carlos Saura’s Salomé is special because it lets you watch a legend being forged in real time: first in the sweat-and-sawdust intimacy of rehearsals, then in the full blaze of performance, where flamenco becomes pure storytelling. The camera falls in love with the craft—hands clapping out rhythm, bodies carving emotion into the air, music tightening like a knot—until the famous biblical tale feels less like pageantry and more like something dangerously alive. Aída Gómez commands the screen with a dancer’s charisma that reads as character, not choreography, while Saura’s clean, theatrical staging keeps the focus on movement, tension, and desire rather than spectacle for its own sake. If you need conventional drama beats or subtle background viewing, this may feel intense and stylized, but if you’re open to cinema that communicates through music and motion, it’s hypnotic.
Carlos Saura’s Salomé is clearly aiming to fuse backstage reality with a stylized flamenco retelling of the biblical story, and when it locks into the dance it can be mesmerizing. The catch is that it’s more like watching a rehearsal and a stage performance than watching a conventional drama, so if you need plot momentum, naturalistic dialogue, or emotional intimacy beyond what movement and music convey, you may find it chilly and repetitive. The first half’s process-heavy prep work can feel like homework if you’re not already invested in how dance gets built, and the second half plays like filmed theatre rather than cinema. If you love flamenco, choreography, and Saura’s controlled, painterly staging, it’s a solid showcase; if you’re here for a gripping narrative Salomé, this probably won’t deliver.
