The School of Rock (2003)
Fired from his band and hard up for cash, guitarist and vocalist Dewey Finn finagles his way into a job as a fifth-grade substitute teacher at a private school, where he secretly begins teaching his straight-A students the finer points of rock 'n' roll and the power of sticking it to the man. But as the school’s stern principal closes in and the Battle of the Bands looms, Dewey must risk everything to prove that rock 'n' roll can change lives.
What people think about The School of Rock
School of Rock is that rare crowd-pleaser that feels like it’s running on pure electricity: a comedy with the swagger of a great rock song and the heart of a genuinely uplifting underdog story. Jack Black’s Dewey Finn is loud, messy, and impossible to ignore, but the movie’s secret weapon is how smartly it treats the kids—not as punchlines, but as real little people discovering confidence, teamwork, and their own kind of cool. Richard Linklater keeps the vibe loose and joyful, letting the humor land naturally while the music builds into something legitimately rousing rather than just “cute for a family film.” If you’re allergic to big, boisterous performances or feel-secondhand-embarrassment setups, it might not be your tempo, but if you want a funny, warm, guitar-amp-loud good time, this one earns its encore.
School of Rock clearly wants to be a loud, feel-good love letter to rock music and the kids who just need someone to tell them they’re allowed to be awesome, and on that level it mostly delivers. The catch is that it’s rock ’n’ roll with the rough edges sanded off: the story is tidy, the rebellion is safe, and the “stick it to the man” energy is more PG pep rally than anything genuinely dangerous. If you’re hoping for Linklater-style bite or a music comedy with real grit, you may find it a bit over-produced and emotionally prepackaged. But if you can accept the premise as a warm crowd-pleaser, Jack Black’s commitment and the kids’ performances give it enough charm to justify the ride.
