Man of the House (2005)
Texas Ranger Roland Sharp is assigned to protect the only witnesses to the murder of a key figure in the prosecution of a drug kingpin -- a group of University of Texas cheerleaders. Sharp must now go undercover as an assistant cheerleading coach and move in with the young women.
What people think about Man of the House
Man of the House is the kind of odd-couple comedy that works because it commits to its central mismatch: Tommy Lee Jones’s granite-faced Texas Ranger dropped into the neon-bright world of college cheerleading, playing it so straight that the laughs sneak up on you. Director Stephen Herek keeps the pace brisk, stitching together fish-out-of-water humor with just enough action and real stakes to make the protection detail feel like more than a gimmick. Jones’s deadpan authority, bounced off Cedric the Entertainer’s easy charm and a lively ensemble of witnesses who gradually become a team, gives the movie its most winning moments. It’s broad, PG-13, and occasionally a bit dated in its jokes and ogling, but if you’re in the mood for a light action-comedy where the star’s stern presence is the punchline, it’s an easy, pleasantly silly watch.
Man of the House wants to be a light action-comedy built on the “stone-faced cop stuck babysitting bubbly civilians” formula, with Tommy Lee Jones playing it straight while the cheerleaders and Cedric the Entertainer try to keep things breezy. The problem is it feels mechanically assembled: jokes land with a thud, the plot twists are telegraphed, and the movie never quite decides whether it’s a harmless fish-out-of-water comedy or a semi-serious crime story. If you’re sensitive to early-2000s ogling humor and broad stereotypes, this will likely wear thin fast, even with a PG-13 sheen. Still, if you just want an easy, undemanding cable-style watch with a few competent action beats and a gruff lead learning to soften up, it does that job without asking much of you.
