Head of State (2003)
When a presidential candidate dies unexpectedly in the middle of the campaign, the Democratic party unexpectedly picks a Washington, D.C. alderman as his replacement.
What people think about Head of State
Head of State is special because it takes a familiar political fairy tale and jolts it to life with Chris Rock’s street-smart voice—sharp enough to sting, warm enough to win you over. Rock and Bernie Mac have that rare, loose chemistry that makes scenes feel like they’re happening right now, not being performed, and the movie’s best laughs come from watching plainspoken honesty crash headfirst into polished campaign nonsense. The vibe is upbeat and scrappy, a crowd-pleasing comedy with just enough real-world bite about class, image, and who gets heard to make it feel smarter than its setup suggests. It’s a bit uneven and definitely PG-13 in language and attitude, but if you want a political comedy with genuine energy and a surprisingly earnest streak, it’s an easy vote.
Head of State wants to be a feel-good political underdog story with a satirical bite, using Chris Rock’s everyman charisma to poke at how campaigns are manufactured. The problem is the movie rarely commits to being sharp or daring, so the “big” political jokes often land like safe sitcom gags and the plot hits predictable beats long before you do. If you’re expecting the fearless edge of Rock’s stand-up or a genuinely incisive political comedy, this can feel watered down and a bit amateurish. That said, Rock and Bernie Mac have enough energy to keep it watchable, and if you’re in the mood for a light, crowd-pleasing comedy with occasional truth-telling rather than real satire, it may still do the job.
