Lakshya is special because it turns a familiar coming-of-age idea into something sweeping and hard-earned, charting one man’s search for purpose until it feels like you’ve lived every doubt, stumble, and breakthrough with him. Farhan Akhtar directs with a polished, unshowy confidence—training-ground rhythms, intimate conversations, and the vast, unforgiving landscapes of Kargil all flow with clarity and momentum—while Hrithik Roshan makes Karan’s transformation feel earned rather than announced. Preity Zinta brings spark and backbone as a journalist who won’t settle for half-measures, and their chemistry adds warmth and longing without softening the film’s steelier edges. The tone balances romance and rousing patriotism with sobering battlefield stakes, and the cinematography plus staging of the musical moments give it a big-screen lift that lingers. It’s long and deliberately paced, so it may not be for viewers wanting nonstop action, but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of war drama that leaves you strangely energized—because it believes, convincingly, in growth.

Lakshya is clearly aiming for an inspirational coming-of-age war drama: a drifting young man finds purpose, love, and backbone through military life and combat. When it works, Hrithik Roshan’s transformation is compelling, the Kargil backdrop adds scale, and the action is staged with real intent. But the film can feel smugly patriotic, with the opposition painted in broad strokes, and some of the writing leans on token “growth moments” instead of earning them with nuance. If you’re sensitive to chest-thumping nationalism or want the emotional sharpness of Farhan Akhtar’s best work throughout, this may land as more polished and well-meaning than truly profound.
