Underworld (2003)

Underworld is the rare early-2000s action-fantasy that feels like it has a pulse: a sleek, midnight-blue fever dream where bullets, leather, and ancient grudges move with the confidence of a modern myth. Len Wiseman builds a world that’s more than window dressing—its vampire-versus-werewolf lore has the satisfying weight of something argued over for centuries, and every shadowy corridor and rain-slick rooftop seems designed to pull you deeper into the feud. Kate Beckinsale’s Selene anchors the film with icy poise and real intensity, turning the gun-fu spectacle into something you can actually invest in, not just watch. Be warned, it’s proudly violent and operatic rather than subtle, but if you want a stylish, atmospheric thriller that treats its creature mythology like a serious playground, this one still hits hard.

Underworld is trying to be a slick, goth-tinged action fairy tale: a secret vampire–werewolf war, a forbidden connection, and enough gunfire to qualify as a weather system. If you want tight storytelling and characters with real depth, this can feel like a feature-length music video—moody, stylish, and occasionally cool, but also derivative and more interested in posing than paying off its mythology cleanly. The plot dumps a lot of lore fast and expects you to care before it’s earned, so if you’re allergic to “rulebook” fantasy that’s fuzzy on the details, you’ll get impatient. Still, Kate Beckinsale commits, the creature violence is satisfyingly brutal, and if your priority is dark atmosphere plus ballistic monster-hunting, it delivers exactly that.
