Masked and Anonymous (2003)

Masked and Anonymous is the kind of movie that feels less like a neatly wrapped story and more like a fever-dream transmission from a broken country—bold, messy, and strangely hypnotic. Larry Charles builds a cracked, near-future America where a single charity concert becomes a carnival of corruption and yearning, and Bob Dylan’s Jack Fate drifts through it with the weary gravity of a man who’s seen too much to pretend he has answers. The film’s real seduction is its vibe: jagged political satire, dusty apocalyptic poetry, and music that lands like a flare in the dark, with Jeff Bridges as the dogged observer trying to make sense of the noise. It won’t be for everyone—its symbolism can be perplexing and its indulgences are real—but if you’re in the mood for something ambitious and singular that you experience in one sweep, it’s a fascinating ride.

Masked and Anonymous is clearly trying to be a dystopian fable about power, corruption, and spiritual drift, using Bob Dylan’s Jack Fate as a mythic figure dropped into a collapsing society. The problem is it plays more like a deliberately scrambled collage than a story: scenes feel disconnected, the satire is muddy, and the film often mistakes vagueness for profundity, so you may spend more time searching for meaning than feeling anything. If you’re not already on Dylan’s wavelength—or you need coherent plotting, emotional momentum, or even basic clarity—this will likely feel bloated and self-indulgent.
