What really hooks you, though, is the human angle—two detectives chasing something they barely understand, with moral compromises and a personal ache that lingers in the background even when the monsters arrive. The problem is it often tells its story in a murky, roundabout way, so instead of feeling intriguingly complex, it can feel like you’re doing homework just to keep up. If you came for the classic SV2 team dynamic, clever banter, and satisfying mecha problem-solving, this one keeps them at arm’s length and leans harder into grim atmosphere and monster-attack intensity. Still, the film has a serious tone, some striking suspense beats, and a more cinematic ambition than a routine spin-off—just don’t expect it to feel like “comfort Patlabor.”
