Twisted (2004)

Twisted is the kind of glossy, late-night San Francisco thriller that knows how to lure you in with mood first: rain-slick streets, dim bars, and a sense that every conversation has a second meaning. Philip Kaufman gives the material a sleek, grown-up sheen, and the real pleasure is watching a terrific cast lean into the unease—Ashley Judd makes Jessica Shepard both tough and fraying at the edges, while Samuel L. Jackson and Andy Garcia add gravitas and bite to a story that keeps tightening its knots. The movie has a witty, sophisticated edge even as it turns creepy, using suspicion and self-doubt like a slow poison rather than relying on cheap jump scares. It won’t be for everyone—if you’re allergic to erotic-thriller vibes or stories that flirt with pulpy twists, you may roll your eyes—but if you want a tense, atmospheric ride anchored by stars who take it seriously, it’s an easy recommendation.

Twisted is clearly aiming for a slick, steamy San Francisco noir where a capable detective’s personal life becomes the case, and on paper that’s a fun, pulpy setup with a strong cast to sell it. The problem is the movie leans hard on familiar erotic-thriller clichés and contrived turns, so instead of tightening the tension it often feels like it’s pushing pieces around to reach a predetermined “shocking” destination. Ashley Judd brings commitment and Samuel L. Jackson has presence, but the script doesn’t give them enough believable behavior to make the mystery land, which drains suspense when you most need it. If you enjoy early-2000s trashy thrillers as comfort food, you may have a decent time; if you want smart plotting, genuine surprises, or a grounded procedural, this will likely test your patience.
