Albert Finney gives a Churchill of bristling wit and bruised pride, while Vanessa Redgrave’s Clementine isn’t a saintly spouse but a full, formidable partner—tender, exasperated, and essential—so their relationship becomes the film’s beating heart. Richard Loncraine’s direction keeps the period detail crisp and lived-in, letting the political tension of the 1930s simmer at the edges as the emotional stakes take center stage. If you’re looking for battlefield spectacle or a rousing greatest-hits biopic, this isn’t that; it’s quieter, smarter, and more intimate—and precisely because of that, it lingers.

The Gathering Storm is clearly aiming for an intimate, human-scale Churchill story—less “great man of history,” more bruised marriage, money stress, and political isolation before the war. When it works, it’s thanks to committed performances (Finney brings heft; Redgrave gives Clemmie real spine) and a lived-in sense of domestic tension at Chartwell. But it also plays fast and loose with history and character shading, and the narrative compressions can feel like you’re watching selected highlights rather than a smoothly building arc—especially as it leaps ahead near the end. If you want a rigorously detailed, chronologically satisfying political biopic, this may irritate you; if you’re okay with a prestige TV-style drama that prioritizes mood and relationship over strict accuracy, it’s a solid watch.
