Mamoru Hosoda directs with a crisp, propulsive style—clean animation, smart pacing, and a mounting sense of nationwide panic that’s genuinely exciting without ever losing its playful Digimon spirit. The vibe is summer-bright on the surface but wired with tension underneath, building to a rousing, crowd-pleasing crescendo that shows why it became a high point of the franchise and a clear stepping-stone to Summer Wars. If you don’t care for digital jargon or monster-fighting action, it may not convert you, but if you want a tight, influential animated ride that moves like lightning, it’s an easy recommendation.

Our War Game is clearly aiming for a sleek, real-time cyber-thriller wrapped in Digimon spectacle, and when it’s firing on all cylinders the internet-chaos premise and ticking-clock energy really work. The problem is it’s so short that the story feels more like a sprint than a journey, with character beats (including the Sora/Tai stuff) sketched in rather than earned and some transitions coming off abrupt. Animation and pacing can be uneven, so if you’re expecting a fully polished, emotionally rich feature, this may feel like a cool extended episode that ends just as it’s getting going. Still, if you mainly want a fast, nostalgic hit with a memorable villain concept and a satisfying “new power” payoff, it does deliver that in a tight package.
