It’s a poignant, beautifully crafted experience—devastating at times, yes—so if you prefer your dramas light and escapist it may be heavy, but if you want cinema that leaves you moved and thoughtful, it’s unmissable.

Kannathil Muthamittal is clearly aiming for an emotionally sweeping family drama set against the very real brutality of war, and at its best it delivers tender performances and a sincere humanist heart. The problem is that the plot sometimes asks you to accept a few too many convenient leaps—especially around the family’s movement into a conflict zone—which can pull you out of the story if you like your drama grounded. As it goes on, the film leans harder into melodrama, with a few jarring, slightly forced moments and song breaks that may feel out of place given the subject matter. If you’re comfortable with heightened, lyrical storytelling and can forgive realism for emotion, it’s rewarding; if you need tight logic and tonal consistency, this may test your patience.
