Azazel (2002)

Azazel is special because it treats a mystery like a grand, old-fashioned ride: elegant, suspenseful, and steeped in the texture of 1876 Moscow, where every lamplit street and gilded interior feels lived-in rather than merely costumed. Guided by Boris Akunin’s own script, it has the satisfying snap of a well-built puzzle, following young investigator Erast Fandorin as a seemingly simple death opens into something far larger and more unsettling in its “for the greater good” ambitions. The film’s pleasures are as much in the atmosphere as the intrigue, with solid, characterful performances—Marina Neelova in particular bringing a magnetic intelligence to the screen—that keep the story grounded even as it grows more adventurous. If you crave modern, high-octane action, it may feel deliberately paced, but for viewers who like their thrills wrapped in period detail and sharp storytelling, it’s an absorbing, classy watch.

Azazel is clearly aiming for a classy, old-school period mystery with political intrigue, sweeping conspiracies, and a young detective finding his footing in 1870s Moscow. The problem is the film often feels more dutiful than gripping: the pacing is long and oddly low on suspense, and the lead performance can come off too flat to carry the investigation’s emotional weight. If you’re coming from Akunin’s novel or you want a tight, twisty thriller, this may feel like a watered-down, slower version of a better story. Still, if you’re patient and mainly here for the historical atmosphere and the broad conspiracy plotting rather than sharp character work, there’s enough there to keep you mildly engaged.
