To prevent a world war from breaking out, famous characters from Victorian literature band together to do battle against a cunning villain.

Explained

What people think about The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

What makes The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen special is its gloriously pulpy dream of Victorian pop culture: a ragtag super-team assembled not from comics, but from the pages of classic literature, thrown into a world of brass gadgets, shadowy conspiracies, and end-of-the-century dread. Stephen Norrington leans into the spectacle with a boyish sincerity—lavish production design, big set pieces, and the kind of unabashed, old-fashioned adventure energy that lets Sean Connery’s weathered charisma anchor the whole contraption. It’s less a tidy, prestige-minded adaptation than a steampunk carnival ride, where Captain Nemo’s Nautilus and the film’s gothic flourishes do a lot of the storytelling between explosions. If you need grounded realism or subtle character work, this may not convert you, but if you’re on the fence and craving a high-concept, high-style fantasy-action romp, it’s a surprisingly enjoyable time capsule of blockbuster imagination.
