Confidence (2003)

Confidence is one of those criminally under-sung capers that moves with the snap of a well-flicked playing card: slick, fast, and always a half-step ahead of your expectations. James Foley stages the con like a dance—cleanly edited, sharply shot, and fueled by dialogue that’s witty without winking too hard—while Edward Burns gives Jake Vig the kind of cool, controlled charm you can’t help but lean toward. Rachel Weisz adds a smart, electric countercurrent, and the supporting cast (including a delightfully keyed-up Paul Giamatti and a steely Andy Garcia) keeps the world buzzing with menace and humor in the same breath. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s harsh violence and very strong language—but if you like your thrillers playful, stylish, and built like a puzzle box, this one pays off with real confidence.

Confidence is trying to be a slick, fast-talking con-game thriller where the fun comes from watching smart people outmaneuver bigger sharks, and on that level it mostly delivers. The problem is it’s so polished and twist-happy that the characters can feel like stylish chess pieces rather than people you care about, which drains the tension when things turn deadly. If you want emotional weight, believable stakes, or anyone remotely moral to hang onto, this will likely feel hollow and a bit smug. But if you’re in the mood for a snappy, profanity-laced, violence-prone caper with a strong cast and a glossy early-2000s vibe, it’s an easy enough ride.
