Identity (2003)

Identity is the kind of slick, rain-lashed thriller that grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go, turning a simple “strangers stuck at a motel” setup into a tightly wound clockwork of dread and surprise. James Mangold stages the stormy isolation with pulpy confidence, letting John Cusack’s steady decency and Ray Liotta’s combustible edge play off a terrific ensemble while the movie keeps shifting your suspicions from one face to the next. It’s nasty in flashes and darkly funny in the way only a good pressure-cooker mystery can be, always pushing you to solve it a second before it changes the rules. The twists are the main event—if you love being toyed with (and don’t mind strong violence and language), it’s a wickedly entertaining ride; if you prefer your mysteries straightforward, you may find it a bit too pleased with its own cleverness.

Identity is trying to be a slick, stormy whodunit with a pulpy slasher edge, trapping a grab-bag of strangers in one location and letting paranoia do the heavy lifting. For most of its runtime it’s tense, tightly paced, and well-cast—Cusack and Liotta in particular keep the energy sharp even when the characters are basically archetypes. The catch is that the movie leans hard on late-game twists that some viewers find clever and others find aggressively contrived, retroactively making earlier clues feel less like fair-play mystery and more like narrative sleight of hand. If you hate “gotcha” endings or need your thrillers to feel plausible and grounded, this one may leave you feeling played; if you enjoy twisty, high-concept mind-game thrillers and can roll with the logic, it’s a solid, nasty little ride.
