Like Mike (2002)
Calvin and his friends, who all live in an orphanage, find old shoes with the faded letters MJ connected to a powerline. One stormy night, they go to get the shoes when Calvin and the shoes are struck by lightning. Calvin now has unbelievable basketball powers and has the chance to play for the NBA.
What people think about Like Mike
Like Mike taps into that pure, childlike wish-fulfillment fantasy—what if the right pair of shoes could turn belief into flight—and it does it with an easygoing charm that makes the whole ride feel sunny and sincere. Lil’ Bow Wow carries the movie with an engaging, likable presence, selling the big dream without winking too hard at it, while the basketball sequences keep the energy buoyant and crowd-pleasing. The vibe is light, upbeat, and family-friendly, the kind of pleasant diversion that’s happiest when you’re just letting it entertain you and nudge you toward a smile. It’s not for anyone craving realism or sharp-edged comedy, but if you want an uplifting sports-fantasy that plays like a warm Saturday afternoon, this one delivers.
Like Mike is aiming for a kid-friendly wish-fulfillment fantasy: an underdog orphan gets a magical boost and suddenly lives every basketball fan’s daydream. The problem is it plays exactly how you expect—big heart, bigger clichés, and a syrupy tone that can feel more like a commercial for feel-good inspiration than a story with surprises. Adults looking for clever comedy or anything remotely subtle will probably check out early, because the plot is as formulaic as it gets. That said, younger viewers who just want goofy hoops antics, easy laughs, and a simple “believe in yourself” message may have a perfectly decent time.
