Chicago is that rare movie musical that doesn’t pause the story to sing—it turns the story into a show, with every number crackling like a spotlight snapping on at just the right moment. Rob Marshall stages 1920s scandal and courtroom circus as a sleek, jazzy fever dream, where satire, sex appeal, and showbiz razzle-dazzle dance together with wicked intelligence. Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones play their rivalry like a duet of sharpened smiles, while Richard Gere glides through the chaos with the easy charm of a man selling miracles to the highest bidder. If you dislike musicals or prefer your crime dramas sober and grounded, this may feel too theatrical—but if you’re even slightly open to spectacle, it’s an exhilarating, funny, and surprisingly pointed crowd-pleaser.

Chicago is trying to turn a murder-and-media circus into a dazzling stage show, and on that level it largely delivers: big numbers, sharp satire, and two leads who know exactly how to sell a spotlight-hungry grin. But if you want musicals where the dancing breathes and the emotion lands quietly, the rapid-fire editing and glossy presentation can feel like it’s constantly cutting away from the very performances you came to watch. The tone is intentionally cynical—everyone’s hustling, nobody’s pure—which is the point, but it can also make it hard to care beyond the spectacle. See it if you’re up for a slick, darkly funny Broadway-style razzle-dazzle; skip it if you’re allergic to showbiz smugness or need a warmer, deeper character story.
