Roger Dodger is that rare comedy-drama that talks like a cocktail-party ringleader and thinks like a late-night confession: fast, funny, and quietly bruised underneath. Campbell Scott turns Roger into a mesmerizing hurricane of charm and cruelty, and the film’s razor-edged dialogue snaps with the confidence of a great ad pitch—until the night starts revealing what that kind of “control” really costs. It’s definitely not for viewers who hate talky, R-rated films or cringe at morally messy behavior, but if you like smart scripts that make you laugh and then leave you thinking, this one lands.

Roger Dodger is aiming for a sharp, talky New York character study about a charismatic ad man whose “seduction wisdom” gets stress-tested when he mentors his awkward teenage nephew. When it works, it’s genuinely funny and uncomfortable in the right way, with strong performances (Campbell Scott’s slickness and Jesse Eisenberg’s nervous energy make a convincing odd couple). But the film can feel like it’s pushing you toward despair with a bit too much calculation, and some of the big emotional pivots land more like screenplay mechanics than earned self-realization. If you’re sensitive to cynical sexual politics, heavy R-rated language, or a story that flirts with insight but doesn’t fully convince, this may feel more grating than enlightening.
