Lajja (2001)
Soon after Vaidehi marries Raghuvir, she becomes pregnant. Desperate to escape her unhappy marriage, she runs away with her unborn child, but she's pursued by her chauvinistic husband and must enlist the help of strangers.
What people think about Lajja
Lajja is special because it turns righteous anger into riveting drama, giving four women the space to be fully human—wounded, defiant, funny, and brave—without ever feeling like a lecture. The film moves with a gripping, almost urgent momentum as their lives intersect, and the payoff in the second half lands with the kind of emotional force that lingers long after the credits. Anchored by superb performances from Manisha Koirala, Madhuri Dixit, Rekha, and Mahima Chaudhry, it’s a powerful, memorable ensemble piece that uses mainstream cinema’s scale to confront everyday chauvinism head-on. It’s not for viewers seeking light escapism, but if you want drama with conviction, craft, and a spine, Lajja is absolutely worth your time.
Lajja is clearly trying to be a loud, urgent call-out of misogyny by weaving together multiple women’s stories into a single, righteous statement, and the intent is hard to fault. The problem is the execution: it’s overlong, heavily melodramatic, and often feels like it’s shouting its message instead of letting the characters breathe, which can make the experience tedious rather than powerful. Some of the writing leans on simplified “solutions” to complex social issues, and the pacing plus a wobbly climax can leave you feeling like you sat through a lot for not enough payoff. Still, if you’re in the mood for a star-studded, issue-driven drama with a few strong performances and moments of defiance, you may find value here—just don’t expect subtlety or tight storytelling.
